Picnic shelters at Triple Falls, High Falls, Lake Dense, Lake Imaging, and the Guion Farm can be reserved for family reunions, parties, and other gatherings. Fees range from $25 to $60 depending on the size of the shelter. See Official Rules
Motorized vehicles require a special permit to travel beyond the gates at the six access areas in DuPont State Recreational Forest. This restriction applies to all motorized vehicles with the exception of motorized wheelchairs that are used by persons with disabilities. A limited number of permits are available for motorized vehicles used to transport people with physical handicaps. Please allow 48 hours in advance. See details from NC Forestry.
Hiking is allowed on all trails in DuPont State Recreational Forest. Bikers and equestrians also use most of the trails in DuPont State Recreational Forest. Pedestrians (walkers, hikers, runners) should yield to equestrians when they meet on a trail.
Horse riders should Stay on trails marked with brown wooden trail name signs. They are prohibited on unmarked trails, trails with the horse symbol crossed out, closed trails or trails marked for hikers/foot traffic only. Equestrians should expect to meet other trail users around every turn. Exercise caution when meeting pedestrians and bikers on a trail.
Mountain Bikers should Stay on trails marked with brown wooden trail name signs. They are prohibited on unmarked trails, trails with the bike symbol crossed out, closed trails or trails marked for hikers/foot traffic only. According to the International Mountain Bike Association trail courtesy rules, bikers yield to hikers and equestrians on the trails. As an additional courtesy, bikers should reduce their speed on single track trails and when approaching equestrians and blind curves. Racing is not allowed.
Hunting in DuPont State Recreational Forest, which is a registered N. C. Game Lands, requires a special permit that is issued by the N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Hunting days (in season) are Thursday—Saturday for deer, small game, wild turkeys, and wild hogs. Refer to the N.C. Fishing & Hunting Regulations Digest for more information.
Fishing is permitted with a valid N.C. fishing license. Streams are classified as “wild” trout waters, except for a delayed harvest area on Little River between Lake Dense outflow and Hooker Falls. Refer to the N.C. Fishing & Hunting Regulations Digest for more information.
All motorized vehicular use is prohibited inside the forest (except public roadways) by the N. C. Game Lands regulations. Signs have been posted. Wildlife wardens are presently arresting violators. The fine is $50 for first offences of vehicle for offence.
