Twenty years ago DuPont State Recreational Forest became state land and opened its gates to the public for the first time. It is hard to imagine not having access to DuPont Forest, but it almost happened. In 1999, what we now know as the waterfall corridor was slated to become part of The Cliffs Community, an exclusive, gated community. A diverse group of hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and conservationist rallied public support to convince then NC Governor Hunt to condemn the private development around the waterfalls.  They called themselves the Friends of the Falls,

Recently, Representative Chuck McGrady, Aleen Steinberg, and Jeff Jennings, three integral members of the Friends of the Falls, got together on Zoom to reflect on their campaign to save DuPont Forest for future generations.
